What is men’s health?

Men’s health encompasses a broad range of preventive care, diagnostic testing, and disease management for men. While all adults are vulnerable to health concerns, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that men are far more likely than women to put off seeing a doctor for long periods.

In addition, certain chronic diseases and health concerns are more prevalent in men than in women.

Which diseases impact men’s health?

Many chronic diseases that impact men also affect women. However, men are more likely than women to develop:

Heart disease

Heart disease is an umbrella term for disorders that affect the heart and cardiovascular system. One of the most common risk factors for heart disease is high cholesterol, particularly low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels. Also called “bad” cholesterol, high levels of LDL are often the result of poor diet, inactivity, and excess weight.

Lung disease

Lung disease occurs when your lungs don’t function as they should. Many types of lung disease exist. Some block the airways, making oxygen intake difficult, while others damage the lungs themselves. Smoking cigarettes — a lifestyle choice that is more common in men than women — is one of the most common risk factors for lung disease.

Skin cancer

As the American Academy of Dermatology reports, men are more likely to die of melanoma than women. Along with less frequent doctors visits, men are also less likely to apply sunscreen regularly, especially since many cosmetic products that women use contain SPF.

Prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is a male-specific disease. This small gland between the bladder and the penis is a part of the male reproductive system. After skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men. However, the disease is highly treatable in its early stages.
